I love Instagram. Simply put, it’s the most accessible creative outlet. That’s why, when getting to know someone, discovering their Instagram can be a delightful stage. Especially when I meet someone very shy in real life and their IG persona is super bold, confident, and stylishโit’s the kind of twist I live for! (I’m thinking of a certain someone as I’m writing this.)
When I say ‘IG persona,’ it literally means everything. Their handle, profile picture, bio. Are they feed person or stories person? What do they have on their feed? Aww, this person has a cat. Oh wow, she is so well-traveled. What do they post on stories? I see she cooks. I like how they dress. He shares a lot of memes. MEMES. Don’t even get me started on that. What they laugh atโtheir humor codeโtells so much about the person. It shows not only how trendy and up-to-date they are but also so much about their moral and emotional intelligence.
And their aesthetic, oh the aesthetic. What kind of pics do they choose for their photo dumps? And the caption(I always appreciate some hilarious one-liners.)? Which font do they use when posting stories(It could be my thing, but hey, detail is everything. Also if I’m being very honest, I can be judgmental about using certain fonts on stories.)?
So sometimes I thinkโI might know person A better, who is a celeb I only follow on IG, than person B, my actual acquaintance with whom I regularly make small talk. I mean, I know a lot about this celebโtheir fashion style, dog, the fact that they just got engaged, favorite brands, and even their political views. (Wait, nvm. I am starting to think it could be a difference in the boundaries of what Koreans and foreigners share on social.) I mean, we all have a celeb or YouTuber or influencer that we feel like we know better than our actual friends just because we follow them on IG, right?
In the end, I guess what I want to say is: can you actually tell you know someone before checking out their Instagram?
